After a nice, short drive, we pulled into Oakdale, Wisconsin. Word of advice: don't blink while driving down the highway, or you’ll miss the whole town entirely!

We are set up for the night at the Oakdale KOA Journey, and I have to admit, it’s a remarkably quiet and peaceful spot. The humans picked this location very strategically for the Fourth of July. You see, Shadow is not a fan of loud booms and flashing lights. Since Oakdale is a tiny town with a population of only about 300 people, there’s no big municipal fireworks show to worry about. It’s the perfect, low-stress sanctuary for the "Dog House on Wheels."

The "Blue Bull" Incident

While the neighborhood is peaceful, my initial site sweep uncovered a massive, unprecedented anomaly.

Standing right there near the main building was a giant BLUE BULL.

Now, I’ve inspected a lot of livestock in my line of work, but I have never in my life seen a blue bull. I immediately went into full threat-assessment mode.

  1. The Staredown: I planted all four paws, raised my tail, and stared it right in the eye. I waited for it to move, twitch, or blink. Nothing. It just stood there, staring back with cold, motionless confidence.

  2. The Approach: Seeing that it wasn't backing down, I dropped low into my stealth-crawl and slowly advanced toward the flank. I circled around and executed a rigorous sniffing audit on its front leg.

  3. The Diagnosis: Fiber-reinforced resin. Zero pulse. Zero scent of live cattle.

Once I knew the perimeter was safe, I turned around and barked over to Shadow—who was maintaining a very "safe" 50-foot distance behind a park bench: "It's clear! It’s just a giant toy, it’s not alive!"

She trotted over looking relieved, but I stayed on guard just in case the blue monster decided to make a move.

🐾 Patches' Fourth of July Assessment:

10/10 for noise control (zero fireworks!), 10/10 for giant blue lawn ornaments, 100% safe for scared Labs.

Human Notes:

Oakdale may be small (sitting at right around 300 residents in Monroe County), but it sits in a very iconic part of Wisconsin!

  • Gateway to Cranberry Country: Monroe County is famous for its massive cranberry marshes. Just a short drive away in Warrens is where a huge portion of the nation's cranberries are grown and harvested!

  • Driftless Charm: The area sits right near the edge of Wisconsin’s "Driftless Region"—a unique landscape that was completely bypassed by ancient glaciers, leaving behind beautiful rolling hills, bluff valleys, and quiet streams.
