Cornfields and Canadian Geese: A Tactical Report from Clarion, IA
On our long trek back to the Florida base camp, we made a pit stop in a little place called Clarion, Iowa. Population: about 5,400 humans. Let's just say there are significantly more cornfields than people in this neck of the woods.
We stayed at Lake Cornelia Park, and I have to admit, it’s a premier spot for a "work-from-the-road" dog.
The Terrain
The campground is top-tier. We're talking:
-
Endless Trails: Perfect for high-speed security sweeps.
-
Lush Green Grass: Ideal for Shadow's "cloud-monitoring" sessions.
-
Prime Sniffing Real Estate: More trees than I could count. I’m still processing the data from half of them.
The Canadian "Threat"
However, the park had one major flaw: Canadian Geese. Now, we’ve had run-ins with these guys before back in Pigeon Forge, TN. Let me tell you, those birds have zero respect for a dog's personal space—or their tails. They "do their business" wherever they please, if you catch my drift. While our human companions seem to enjoy "watching" them, I stayed on high alert. You never know when a goose is going to drop a tactical "surprise" in the middle of your favorite patch of grass.
Shadow’s Sidenote: "Patches was vibrating with intensity the whole time. Me? I just found a nice soft spot, watched the Iowa clouds roll by, and ignored the honking. If a goose wants to leave a surprise, that’s a problem for the humans' shoes, not my fur."
Human Notes:
While Patches and Shadow were busy with their "Geese Security Detail," we humans were soaking in the absolute tranquility of Lake Cornelia Park. If you are looking for a high-speed, tourist-heavy destination, this isn't it—and that is exactly why we loved it.
Why Lake Cornelia is a "Traveler’s Treasure"
Located just north of Clarion, Iowa, Lake Cornelia Park is the kind of county-managed gem that seasoned RVers dream of finding.
-
The Best Value on the Road: At less than $30 per night for RV full hookups, this was easily one of our most affordable stops on the entire journey. In an era where some parks are pushing $100+, finding a peaceful, well-maintained spot like this feels like winning the lottery.
-
The Atmosphere: It’s quiet. Really quiet. The park is nestled between the lake and the vast Iowa cornfields, offering a level of peace that’s hard to find near the major interstates.
-
Park Perks: The park features a swimming beach, a modern playground (if you have the grandkids in tow!), and a very convenient boat ramp.
Exploring the "Heartland" Surroundings
Clarion itself is a classic American town that feels like a step back into a simpler time. It serves as the county seat of Wright County and has a rich agricultural history that surrounds you the moment you leave the campground.
-
The 4-H Connection: Did you know Clarion is the birthplace of the 4-H emblem? Back in 1907, a local school superintendent named O.H. Benson came up with the idea for a three-leaf clover (later four) to represent the "Head, Heart, Hands, and Health" of rural youth.
-
Agriculture as Art: Driving around the area in July is a sensory experience. The corn is "head-high" and vibrant green, stretching as far as the eye can see. It puts the "work" of the American farmer into a beautiful perspective.
