Northwood Naps and Smoked Snacks: Two Weeks in Duluth
If you want to know what "Dog Heaven" looks like, I’ve found it. We just wrapped up two fantastic weeks in Duluth, Minnesota, staying at the Mont du Lac Resort.
The humans were feeling pretty nostalgic—they remember when this place was just a local ski hill where the kids used to spend their winters. But for me? It was a summer paradise.
The "Anti-Florida" Grass
The first thing I noticed was the grass. Back at our base camp in Florida, the grass is... well, complicated. You have to keep one eye open for fire ants at all times. But here in Duluth? The grass is thick, lush, and perfectly green. I spent a significant portion of my "workday" just lying there, watching the clouds and not worrying about a single itchy intruder.
The Mystery of the Missing Mosquitoes
Usually, the humans tell stories about the Minnesota "State Bird" (the mosquito) ruling the skies. But this year, we got lucky! The air was clear, and I could enjoy the trails with Patches without having to constantly snap at the air. It made our daily "Perimeter Checks" much more enjoyable.
The Great North Shore Fish Heist
One morning, we hopped into the truck and drove up the North Shore. We eventually stopped at a fresh smoked fish market.
Now, I have a bone to pick with the management: No Dogs Allowed. Patches and I had to stay in the truck while the humans went inside. But the moment they opened that door to come back out? The smell was out of this world. It was a rich, salty, smokey aroma that had Patches drooling all the way back to the "Dog house on Wheels".
I waited as patiently as a Lab mix can (which is to say, not very patiently) until we got back to the "Dog House on Wheels." The humans finally shared a taste, and let me tell you... Umm, umm. That was the good stuff.
🐾 Shadow’s "Smoked Fish" Rating: 5/5 Paws
I’d wait in the truck for another hour if it meant another bite of that trout.
